A bad economy is a bad economy no matter what angle you look at it from. People have less money so they are spending less money and therefore companies are taking in less revenue. In a nutshell that is how you would describe a bad economy. Many economists take a nuclear holocaust kind of view when it comes to who will survive a bad economy. Just like it is predicted that cockroaches and Twinkies will be the only things to survive a nuclear holocaust there are only a few types of businesses that have the ability to survive a bad economy. One of those types of businesses is online businesses.

The reason advertising on blogs is so effective is that it allows businesses to reach out to very specialized niches that match with the products they want to sell. Consider which would be more cost-effective: reaching 100 television viewers who may or may not be interested in a vitamin product, or reaching 100 blog readers who have visited a blog about health products? Clearly, the blog about health audience has a loyal, dedicated readership made up of exactly the types of people who buy vitamins.

Forecasters at ZenithOptimedia and at Barclays Capital (formerly Lehman Brothers) are predicting growth in spending on online advertising in 2009 – which is great news for current bloggers and those looking to break into the blogging market. Of course, they are predicting less spending on online ads compared to what they predicted before the economic crisis (Zenith lowered its prediction from 26% growth to 23% growth), but this still means more money is being poured into online advertising than ever before. All in all, US marketers are expected to spend nearly $25 billion in online advertising in 2009.

As an advertising executive you can look at a bad economy in two ways. You can look at a bad economy as a time when customers are slashing their advertising budgets and you may find yourself bringing in less revenue that you did in the previous year. Your other option is to look at a bad economy as an opportunity to grow your client base and grow your business. It is true that advertising budgets are being slashed nearly across the board but that just means that you have to work a bit harder and take on more clients.
